Set up your phone's emergency medical info in Spanish

Most phones let you store medical information and emergency contacts that can be seen from the lock screen.

If you live or spend time in Mexico, adding key details in Spanish can help emergency personnel understand them quickly.

Find It

  1. On iPhone, open the Health app and tap Medical ID.
  2. On Android, go to Settings, then Safety & emergency (or Emergency information).
  3. The exact wording can vary by phone.

Understand It

  1. In an emergency, you may not be able to unlock your phone or explain your medical history.
  2. Having basic information available from the lock screen gives someone helping you another way to quickly find important details.
  3. In Mexico, putting key medical information in Spanish can remove an unnecessary language barrier.
  4. Focus on information that could matter immediately. You do not need to translate your entire medical history.

Do It

Turn on the setting that allows emergency information to be viewed while the phone is locked.

Add your details, using the Spanish terms where helpful

  • Alergias — Allergies (any serious medication, food or other allergies)
  • Medicamentos — Medications (use the generic name and include the dose)
  • Condiciones médicas — Medical conditions (that could affect emergency treatment)
  • Tipo de sangre — Blood type (if you know it)

Contacto de emergencia — Emergency contact (include the full phone number with country code, and note which language they speak: Habla inglés or Habla español)

Done

  1. Lock your phone and test it yourself. Make sure the information shows without entering your passcode.
  2. Check this again after changing phones or completing a major software update.
  3. Update medications, emergency contacts or medical conditions when they change.

Tulum Sorted Tip

Once yours is done, check the phones of your partner, parents, housemates or travel companions too. This is one of those small things that is very easy to put off because you do not need it today. That is also exactly why today is a good time to do it.
