How to Send Money & Pay People in Mexico

Need to pay the pool guy, gardener, cleaner, or contractor? Or just move money into your Mexican bank? Let's get those pesos where they need to go without sending them on a sightseeing tour.

Find It: What Are You Trying to Do?

Sooner or later most of us need one of three things in Mexico: to pay someone who works for us — the pool guy, the gardener, the cleaner — to send money to another person, or to move funds into our own Mexican bank account. Below, you can see how many stops your pesos make along the way, then pick the option that fits.

Understand It: How Many Stops Do Your Pesos Make?

Add the stops your money would pass through on its way to the pool guy. It is an illustration of how money travels — not payment instructions, and not a comparison of prices or speed.

Do It: Pick a Transfer Option

Remitly

A direct transfer from a U.S. or Canadian debit card or bank into a supported Mexican bank account, or cash pickup at a partner location. The first option to check for a one-step transfer, but not always the fastest or the cheapest, and not permitted for every contractor or business payment. If that applies to you, check Remitly Business or send from your own bank.

Open Remitly

Wise

Worth it if you already hold a balance in Wise, or want the mid-market rate with a plainly listed fee. It sends to supported Mexican bank accounts only — not every bank qualifies — and it does not offer cash pickup.

Open Wise

Xoom

Built for personal transfers to family and friends, with cash pickup at partner locations around Mexico if the recipient does not use a bank account. Personal remittance rules apply, so check before using it for a business payment.

Mexican bank transfer (SPEI)

Already holding pesos in a Mexican account? SPEI is Mexico's domestic bank transfer system: pesos move between Mexican banks in minutes, usually free or for a few pesos. You need the recipient's 18-digit CLABE, and it is the cheapest route whenever the money is already in Mexico.

Done: Payment Checklist

Tick each one off as you go.

Checklist

Make sure you and the recipient agree on the pesos, not the dollars.

Check the CLABE, or the name on the pickup ID. One wrong digit can send the money to the wrong account.

Compare the final amount they will receive, not just the fee.

Keep the confirmation number — you will need it if anything goes wrong.

Note the date, the amount in pesos and what it was for, then ask them to confirm.

  • ¿Aceptas transferencia?

  • ¿Me pasas tu CLABE?

Can you send me your CLABE?

  • ¿Cuánto te debo?

How much do I owe you?

  • ¿Me puedes dar un recibo?

Can you give me a receipt?

Tulum Sorted Tip

If you're transferring money into your Mexican bank just to immediately send it to someone else, check whether you can pay them directly instead. Your pesos don't need a guided tour of every account you own.
