Paying Your CFE Bill in Tulum: What Actually Works (and What Doesn't)

Paying your electricity bill should be simple. And then your foreign credit card gets declined, the payment machine refuses your cash, and suddenly you've got an afternoon project.

Foreign Credit Cards — It's Complicated

Got a U.S. credit card? Don't assume CFE will accept it just because it works everywhere else.

American Express is an option worth trying. CFE lists Amex for online payments and at participating staffed offices in 2026.

But here's the catch:

  • Foreign-issued Amex cards aren't guaranteed to work.
  • International Visa and Mastercard acceptance can vary.
  • Amex isn't included at CFEmático self-service machines.

Paying From the U.S.? Try Xoom

Don't have a Mexican bank account? Xoom may be your friend.

Eligible customers can pay Mexican CFE bills directly through Xoom, using an available payment method from a supported sending country such as the U.S.

It's especially handy if you're away from Tulum when the bill arrives.

Just check the fees before confirming.

Got a Mexican Bank Account?

You may already have the easiest option sitting on your phone.

Many Mexican banking apps allow CFE payments under Pago de Servicios (bill payments).

Check whether your bank supports CFE, use the correct service reference, and save your payment confirmation.

No separate trip across town required. Lovely.

OXXO to the Rescue

Yes, you can generally pay your CFE bill at OXXO.

Take your bill or payment barcode to the cashier. Check whether the service is available, what payment methods they'll accept, and whether there's a fee.

Keep the receipt!

It's convenient, but don't assume every register can process your payment every time.

The Great CFEmático Cash Mystery

Here's one from actual Tulum experience.

During a recent visit to the Tulum CFE office, the self-service machines weren't accepting cash.

The machines were there. The cash was there. The two apparently weren't speaking.

This doesn't mean cash is never accepted. It means payment options can change depending on the machine and its current condition.

Don't immediately pay twice.

Some payments take time to appear on your account.

Keep your receipt, check your account again, and contact CFE at 071 if the payment hasn't appeared within the expected processing time.

And be careful with unexpected payment links sent by email or message. Use official CFE channels or a payment service you trust.

The Bottom Line

There isn't one perfect way to pay CFE in Tulum.

Your best option depends on your card, your bank, where you are, and occasionally whether a payment machine feels cooperative.

The goal is simple: pay the bill, keep the receipt, and get on with your day.

Good to Know

A card being accepted by CFE doesn't necessarily mean every card issued outside Mexico will work. Keep a backup payment method handy.

Tulum Sorted Tip

Heading to a CFEmático? Bring a backup payment method. Nothing says "productive afternoon" quite like driving across town to discover your pesos aren't welcome today.
