CAPANet — Guest or Registered?
Here's some good news: you don't need to create an account just to pay your water bill.
But if you're managing several properties or simply like keeping things organized, a registered CAPANet account lets you link multiple contracts, review statements and download receipts.
There are also Android and iPhone apps if you'd rather handle everything from your phone.
Missed the Due Date?
Unfortunately, CAPANet doesn't accept expired bills.
CAPA says you can pay at the local collection office or wait until the next billing cycle.
We'd recommend checking with CAPA rather than assuming everything can wait. Especially if you already have an outstanding balance.
Paying by Bank Transfer?
Bank transfers may be possible when arranged with CAPA, but don't assume sending the money automatically clears your account.
If CAPA has provided bank-transfer instructions, confirm with the local office that the payment was correctly applied.
Buying or Selling Property? One More Thing.
A paid water bill isn't always enough when you're buying or selling a property.
CAPA issues a Carta de No Adeudo, a document confirming there's no outstanding water-service debt.
If you're purchasing property, it's worth asking about this before closing. Nobody wants an unexpected water-bill mystery with their new house keys.
What About Really Old Debts?
Very old outstanding balances may be handled through CAPA's debt-recovery department, known as DRAEF.
These are different from an ordinary late bill. Ask CAPA whether any payment arrangements or current relief programs apply to your account. Don't assume discounts are automatic.
Renting? Check Who's Responsible.
Before paying a bill that's not in your name, check your rental agreement.
Sometimes water is included in the rent. Sometimes it's the tenant's responsibility.
Ask your landlord for the CAPA contract number and clarify who pays any outstanding balance from before you moved in.
The Bottom Line
Most CAPA payments are straightforward. It's the expired bills, missing account information and old balances that make things interesting.
Keep your contract number, save your receipts and check with CAPA when something doesn't look right.
Because you have better things to do in Tulum than chase a water bill around town.
